How lawyers actually get found
About 4,400 people a month search "seo for lawyers," and they're right to. Above the organic results sits Google's Local Services ("Screened") block and the ad block, so the first genuinely earned position on the page can be most of a scroll down. Winning here isn't about volume of content. It's about being the most demonstrably real, credentialed, locally-rooted answer on a page full of aggregators — which is the one thing an aggregator can never be.
The demand curve: Steadier than most trades but far from flat: family-law searching jumps in January and again in late August after the summer holidays, DUI and criminal defense spike around holiday weekends and New Year's Eve, estate planning climbs in Q4 and after any widely-covered health scare, and employment and business disputes track layoff cycles.
What actually gets in your way
Legal advice falls squarely in Google's "Your Money or Your Life" category, where thin, unattributed, or obviously machine-written pages get held to a much higher standard and quietly stop ranking. In practice this means content has to carry a named attorney author with a bar number and a real bio, has to be accurate about the jurisdiction, and has to be reviewed. The cheap content mill that works fine for a landscaper is actively dangerous for a law firm.
Avvo, Justia, FindLaw, Super Lawyers and Nolo will outrank almost any single firm on the broad head terms, and they monetize by selling your prospect a list of your competitors. You don't beat them head-on. You beat them by owning the map pack, by going deep on jurisdiction-specific and situation-specific queries they can't cover at scale, and — separately — by making sure your own profiles on those directories are complete, since they're often the second and third results a prospect clicks.
Depending on your state, you may not be able to call yourself a specialist or an expert without certification, you may need specific disclaimers on testimonials and case results, and you may face restrictions on comparative or superlative claims. The words that make marketing copy convert are frequently the words that get you a grievance letter.
